Natural Landmark «Barsova Gora»
Barsova Gora is a unique territory. Here, on the right bank of the Ob River, on an area of 17 square kilometers, a grandiose number of archaeological monuments of all known historical periods has been discovered: from the Stone Age to the New Age. These are 66 ancient settlements, over 300 sites and villages (remains of more than 3000 dwellings and buildings), 8 burial grounds, sanctuaries, treasures. Such concentration of natural and cultural heritage objects on one territory is a unique phenomenon for the whole Western Siberia and Russia as a whole. The age of Barsovaya Gora as an object of geological heritage is more than 200,000 years. Up to the present time more than 50 rare plant species grow here. 8 of them are included in the Red List. In the culture of the Khanty people Barsova Gora is a sacred place.
In 2010. Barsova Gora became the winner of the contest «7 Wonders of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic Peoples» in the nomination «Nature», in 2012 its territory was granted the status of a Natural landmark. In 2021, the Barsova Gora became the winner of the TOP-1000 Cultural and Tourist Brands of the Russian Federation contest in the category «The Most Demanded and Popular Brand», as it received strong public support.
In 2021, the Surgut District launched a large-scale project: «Barsova Gora Museum and Tourist Complex», which will be located in the central part of the site. At the initial stage, it will include two objects that will become powerful points of attraction for tourists: the education trail «CheloVechnost» and the museum «Barsova Gora». The project of the museum and tourist complex is based on a modern approach to the integration of academic research (archaeological, botanical, geological and ecological research), modern multimedia forms of presentation of cultural heritage (both in the museum expositions and in the open air) and authentic conditions of location of archaeological heritage in the natural environment (in this case the approach of museification of archaeological monuments in their original location is used). This approach meets all modern trends in the field of preservation and popularization of cultural heritage.
