Memorial monument-chapel

A white stone chapel adorns the Central square of Yugorsk. It was created as a symbol of memory of those who sacrificed their lives to protect the faith and freedom of their fellow countrymen during the great Patriotic war and local conflicts. On the perimeter of the monument is decorated with images of saints: the virgin and God's Son, Nicholas, brothers Boris and Gleb, St. George, St. Sergius of Radonezh. Images of saints are laid out in a mosaic made of "smalt" material. On Sunny days, they shimmer beautifully in the rays. At the top of the chapel, four ribbons of the order are intertwined. Connecting at the top, they form the image of a candle flame. Inside the monument there is a cross and a large figure of the Grieving mother of God. It is made of marble and partially repeats Michelangelo Buonarroti's «Lamentation for Christ», created more than 500 years ago. The construction of the memorial monument took four years. Construction began in 1996, and the Grand opening took place only in 2000 – the year of the 55th anniversary of the Victory in the great Patriotic war.
