A stele made of white marble in memory of the victims was installed on the embankment of the Ob river on may 8, 1995. It replaced a wooden monument that had been standing in this place since 1945 and was lost for unknown reasons. The current obelisk is a huge stele weighing 8 tons. It was made in Yekaterinburg, and then brought to Surgut. The restoration of the monument was initiated by a local journalist and local historian I. p. Zakharov. The authors of the project were the artist V. Olenin and the architect N. Mazurenko. The stele is installed as a thank you for peace and symbolizes the feat of arms of the Surgut people during the great Patriotic war. Many more generations will be able to honor the memory of the heroes in this place, because the history of this war is preserved in the memory of each of us, passed on to children and grandchildren.
