Monument to victims of political repression

What did Surgut remember about the period from 1930 to 1940? A large number of new arrivals to the North. But they didn't come here of their own free will. These were those who suffered from political repression during these years and were expelled from their main place of residence. Then they were called special settlers. Many of these people never reached their place of exile. Others survived, but it was very difficult for them. In memory of these times and people, a monument was erected in Surgut in October 2018. Two nine-meter steles, as if split in half, symbolize the broken life of these people. On one side of the memorial, a collective image of a family of special settlers is immortalized in honor of the victims. On the other is a bronze figure of a man in boots and a sheepskin coat. It embodies all those who still passed the tests and remained to live in the harsh Northern region. Such a sketch of the memorial was created in the 90s by Nodar Chagalidze, ex-Director of the Surgut art and industrial College. However, for many years it lay unclaimed. And only by 2018, at the initiative of the city public organization of people affected by political repression, "Our memory", the layout was finally approved and implemented.
